Weekly Puppy CurriculumÂ
As a responsible breeder, it's important to establish an 8-week curriculum for raising newborn puppies. This will help ensure that your puppies receive the necessary care, attention, and socialization during their crucial first few weeks of life. Here's an example of an 8-week curriculum that we follow:
Week 1:
Keep the puppies in a warm, quiet, and comfortable environment with their mother.
Monitor the puppies regularly for signs of illness, dehydration, or distress.
Ensure that the mother has access to plenty of food and water, and provide her with a comfortable place to rest.
Handle the puppies gently to help them get used to human touch.
Daily weight checks
Week 2:
Continue to monitor the puppies regularly for signs of illness or distress.
Start the puppies on a deworming program to prevent any parasites.
Increase the amount of handling and socialization with the puppies.
Puppies live in a family environment where they are introduced to daily sounds of a home.
Continue daily weight checks
Week 3:
Begin to introduce the puppies to solid food, soaked in puppy formula to make it easier to digest.
Introduce toys and other objects to help stimulate the puppies' senses and promote playfulness.
Increase the amount of handling and socialization with the puppies.
Begin introducing the puppies to a soft, warm bed that is separate from their mother's bedding
Begin to introduce the puppies to a designated potty area and begin potty training them.
Puppies are given first nail trimming.
Weekly weight checks from this point on.
Week 4:
Begin introducing the puppies to different environments, such as the outdoors or other rooms in your home.
Introduce new toys each week.
Increase the amount of playtime and socialization with the puppies.
Begin introducing the puppies to other animals, such as cats or other dogs, to help them socialize.
2nd round of wormer is given.
Week 5:
Continue to introduce the puppies to different environments, people, and animals.
Begin grooming the puppies, including brushing their coats and trimming their nails.
Puppies are on a daily schedule at this point for outside play and potty time.
Provide the puppies with more advanced toys and games to stimulate their minds.
Provide play time that aids in confidence.
Week 6:
Continue to socialize the puppies with different environments, people, and animals.
Schedule a visit with a veterinarian for a full health check-up, vaccinations, and deworming.
Begin crate training the puppies, using a crate in their play area so that they start sleeping in crate with an open door.
Begin to transition the puppies to solid food, using a high-quality puppy food.
Begin working on going up stairs.
Week 7:
Continue to introduce the puppies to new environments and experiences.
Teach the puppies to come when called.
Continue crate training the puppies. At this point, puppies will begin sleeping in a crate at night with the door closed.
Socialize the puppies with a variety of people and animals to help them become well-adjusted and confident.
Gradually reduce the amount of time the puppies spend with their mother to prepare them for weaning.
Week 8:
Continue to socialize the puppies and introduce them to new experiences.
Final round of wormer and 2nd vaccinations are given.
Provide the puppies with plenty of opportunities to play and exercise.
Begin to introduce the puppies to their new families and prepare them for their transition to their forever homes.
After 8 Weeks:
We continue to be here for our families after puppy pickup. We love to receive updates about puppies. We are always here for questions that may arise. Once you have a Cavish puppy, we consider you part of our family.
